Sweet Sorghum
Sorghum Advantages
Sweet Sorghum demonstrates several fundamental advantages over the next most prolific ethanol feedstock, Sugarcane
- A growing period of ~120-130 days as compared to 12-16 months, making 2.5-3 crops per year possible in the correct locations;
- An extremely high yield per acre even on land of marginal quality;
- A very rapid recovery rate from plantation severe weather damage due to the rapid growth rate;
- A water requirement of ~¼ that of Sugarcane 1;
- A cultivation cost much less than that of Sugarcane;
- A higher quality ethanol end product as compared to cane molasses ethanol;
- A nitrogen requirement of ~½ that of Sugarcane 2;
- Does not compete with world food supplies;
- Sorghum ethanol plants can process Sugarcane without major plant alteration allowing a dual feedstock modality.
