Sorghum Advantages

Sweet Sorghum demonstrates several fundamental advantages over the next most prolific ethanol feedstock, Sugarcane

• A growing period of ~120-130 days as compared to 12-16 months, making 2.5-3 crops per year possible in the correct locations;

• An extremely high yield per acre even on land of marginal quality;

• A very rapid recovery rate from plantation severe weather damage due to the rapid growth rate;

• A water requirement of ~¼ that of Sugarcane ¹;

• A cultivation cost much less than that of Sugarcane;

• A higher quality ethanol end product as compared to cane molasses ethanol;

• A nitrogen requirement of ~½ that of Sugarcane ²;

• Does not compete with world food supplies;

• Sorghum ethanol plants can process Sugarcane without major plant alteration allowing a dual feedstock modality.
